What was meant by the cutting was that with celluloid film, you could cut (or trim) from the beginning or the end, or you could spin halfway through and make a cut, then remove perhaps 20 Feet of the film and cut again, then splice the beginning and end of the cut together so that it was still one long piece of film and would be without the 20 feet you cut out.
